Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.

Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.

The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.

From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

What are the Best Markets to Invest in Foreclosures? ? Real Estate ...

augustus-corporation-law-consulting-website-law-firms.jpg

Nothing is sweeter than finding the perfect foreclose property in the perfect area at the perfect price. Just one such property can easily earn you a years worth of investment income. Trouble is most foreclosure investors rarely ever find their ?dream? foreclosure. In fact, the average foreclosure investor will struggle to find a single, decent foreclosed property. It?s not because there aren?t foreclosed properties to go round, but rather because of the sheer number of people looking to invest in foreclosed properties. To make matters worse, investors have penetrated every phase of the foreclosure process.

This means that many savvy investors try to get a steal on a house before the house is made available to the general public. Foreclosed homes are available in almost all areas of the country but investors have a tendency to only look for properties within their general area. Some foreclosure investors have simply forgotten that a profit made anywhere is still a profit. If you?re having trouble locating the perfect foreclosure, it could be because you simply live in an area that isn?t very well suited to foreclosures.

The first market you should consider outside of your own should be the next closest metropolitan area near your home. I happen to be fortunate and live only an hour away from three major metropolitan areas. Each metropolitan area near me has different demographics and different market trends. Before looking into any other area, you should always be sure to have an exit strategy in mind. When it comes to foreclosed homes, the best exit strategy is renting the property. In order to do this you need to evaluate the rental market of your chosen market.

If you like to travel and see new places, you might consider looking for foreclosed homes in the country?s biggest foreclosure markets. Right now, Atlanta, Houston, and Denver have the hottest foreclosure markets anywhere in the United States. In fact, Atlanta has such a high rate of foreclosures that it is frequently shown on television as an example of the recent foreclosure boom. If you happen to have an internet connection you can easily find foreclosed properties in these areas to invest in.

All of the research you need to do to find a foreclosed home can be done online. You can easily look at county and city records online at no cost. You can also find a realtor to use as a partner by going to realtor.com. To find out detailed information about market trends you can look at the websites of local real estate investors clubs. Every major metropolitan area has an investors club.

By expanding your base of operations beyond your usual boundaries you can dig up all kinds of sweet deals you may not have been able to find otherwise.

New SARS-related virus doesn't spread easily between people

LONDON (Reuters) - A new and potentially fatal virus from the same family as SARS which was discovered in a patient in London last week appears not to spread easily form person to person, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday.

In an update on the virus, which has so far killed a Saudi man and made a patient from Qatar critically ill, the United Nations health agency said it was working with international partners to understand the public health risk better.

"From the information available thus far, it appears that the novel coronavirus cannot be easily transmitted from person-to-person," it said in a statement.

The WHO put out a global alert on Sunday saying a new virus had infected a 49-year-old Qatari who had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia, where another man with the same virus had died.

The Qatari was described as critically ill on Tuesday and is being treated in a London hospital. No new confirmed cases of infection with the virus have since been reported, the WHO said.

The new virus shares some of the symptoms of SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, another coronavirus, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed around a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.

Both patients who have so far been confirmed with the virus suffered kidney failure.

SEVERITY

"Given the severity of the two laboratory confirmed cases, WHO is continuing to monitor the situation in order to provide the appropriate response, expertise and support to its member states," the WHO statement said.

Scientists at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which monitors disease in the European Union, said initial virology results and the separation in time of the only two confirmed cases suggest the infection may have developed from animals. Such diseases are known as zoonoses.

"(It) is quite probably is of zoonotic origin and different in behavior from SARS," the scientists wrote in a "rapid communication" study in the online journal Eurosurveillance.

The WHO's clinical guidance to its 194 member states says health workers should be alert to anyone with acute respiratory syndrome and requiring hospitalization who had been in the Middle East where the virus was found or in contact with a suspected or confirmed case within the previous 10 days.

The U.N. agency has not recommended any travel restrictions in connection with the new virus, but said it was working closely with Saudi authorities on health measures for Muslims making the haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Health experts said rapid progress has already been made in figuring out the nature and genetic makeup of the new coronavirus, and in the development of sensitive and specific diagnostic tests.

The WHO said it is working with laboratories in various countries to make these tests available as quickly as possible.

Animals suspected in spread of new virus

(AP) ? Britain's Health Protection Agency has published an early genetic sequence of the new respiratory virus related to SARS that shows it is most closely linked to bat viruses, and scientists say camels, sheep or goats might end up being implicated too.

So far, there are no signs the virus will be as deadly as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed hundreds of people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 global outbreak.

Global health officials say they haven't found evidence the virus can spread between people and suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals.

"It's a logical possibility to consider any animals present in the region in large numbers," said Ralph Baric, a coronavirus expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Biologists now need to go into the area and take samples from any animals they can get their hands on, including camels and goats," he said. Baric said it was crucial to find out how widespread the virus is in animals and what kind of contact might be risky for people.

Baric suggested bats might be spreading the virus directly to humans since the two confirmed infections happened months apart. "If there was an established transmission pattern from other animals, we probably would have seen a lot more cases," he said.

The World Health Organization said it is considering the possibility the new coronavirus sickened humans after direct contact with animals. The agency is now working with experts in the Middle East to figure out how the two confirmed cases got infected but could not share details until the investigation was finished.

One patient was a Saudi Arabian man who died several months ago while the other is a Qatari national who traveled to Saudi Arabia before falling ill and is currently in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.

Earlier this week, WHO issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new respiratory virus, which also causes kidney failure.

Saudi officials have already warned that next month's annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions to Saudi Arabia from all around the world, could allow the virus to spread. As a precautionary measure, they are advising pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

Experts said knowing where a virus comes from provides clues on how to stop it.

"This means we could prevent the fire before it starts instead of rushing towards it with fire trucks and water hoses afterwards," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota.

Osterholm said it was possible bats had simply passed on the virus from other animals and that there could be a complicated transmission chain that ultimately ended in humans.

Viruses reproduce as they infect animals and people, giving them more chances to evolve into a deadlier version.

"We don't know enough about coronaviruses to predict which mutations might make them more lethal or transmissible," Osterholm said. "But you don't want to tempt genetic fate with microbes because you're bound to lose most times."

Bringing Pieces of Mars to Earth: How NASA Will Do It

Over the next few months, NASA will map out a strategy for returning bits of Martian rock and soil to Earth, so scientists can study them for signs of past Red Planet life.

That ambitious goal should drive the space agency's next steps at Mars, according to a report released Tuesday (Sept. 25) by the Mars Program Planning Group. The report also lays out several ways Mars sample-return can be accomplished over the next decade or two, and NASA is reviewing those options now.

The agency may reveal its chosen path in February, after the White House releases its federal budget request for fiscal year 2014, NASA officials said Tuesday. In the meantime, here's a brief rundown of the scenarios they're looking at.

Multiple launches

All the major options proposed by the Mars planning group share three basic components in common: a sampling rover, a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) for blasting the collected rock and soil off the Red Planet surface and a return orbiter, which will snag the samples in space and ferry them to Earth's neighborhood.

In one scenario, these three pieces are all launched separately, with a small "fetch" rover riding along with the MAV. As its name suggests, the fetch rover will carry Red Planet dirt from the sampling rover back to the MAV. [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]

This strategy has the advantage of spreading costs and technical challenges across three missions ? which could each be at least two years apart, since Mars launch windows come about every 26 months ? according to the planning group report.

Another option is to consolidate into two launches. The sampling rover would ride alone, while another liftoff would carry the MAV, fetch rover and return orbiter.

In this case, the orbiter would likely have to be powered by solar electic propulsion (SEP), to cut down on weight. The amount of liquid propellant needed for a traditionally powered spacecraft would be quite heavy.

A single launch

Alternatively, all the pieces needed for Mars sample-return could be lofted in a single shot, the report says.

In this case, the sampling rover would carry an integrated MAV with it, eliminating the need for a fetch rover. Again, the return orbiter would be an SEP craft, which creates thrust by accelerating electrically charged atoms or molecules.

The single-launch option would eliminate some mission complexities, such as coordinating the meetup of samples with the MAV. And it would reduce the project's overall cost by cutting out a launch or two. But this scenario has the highest peak-year costs, the report states.

"They all have their pluses and minuses," Orlando Figueroa, team leader of the Mars Program Planning Group, said of the 1-, 2- and 3-launch options.

"It gives you multiple ways to look at this problem, consistent with budget concerns, consistent with opportunities for collaboration, more technology, et cetera," Figueroa told reporters Tuesday. "And that's what we tried to do ? bring all of those options forth to NASA for consideration."

Multiple rovers?

The above options assume that NASA will pick suitable sampling sites using existing data. But the MPPG report also outlines a path that allows for more on-the-ground research, which some scientists may feel is warranted for such an ambitious and expensive project.

"Preservation of biological signatures is rare on Earth, and investigations at multiple sites on Mars dramatically improves the probability of identifying biologically relevant samples," the report states. [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]

If NASA chooses this course, multiple rovers would be sent to investigate several different sites. Based on the rovers' findings, scientists would eventually select one site for sample return. Mars material would be delivered to Earth via an MAV and return orbiter, as discussed above.

Multiple rovers would incur greater costs, but building identical robots off a production line could help keep the price tag down, the report says.

The human touch

In 2010, President Barack Obama charged NASA with getting astronauts to the vicinity of Mars by the mid-2030s.

The space agency thinks this goal dovetails nicely with its sample-return ambitions, and it sees plenty of room for collaboration between its robotic and human exploration programs in this arena.

For example, astronauts aboard NASA's Orion capsule ? which is still under development ? might be dispatched to intercept the return orbiter in deep space and bring the Mars samples down to Earth, officials said Tuesday.

This approach would eliminate the need to harden the sample capsule for Earth entry, since it would land aboard Orion. And an astronaut inspection would also help ensure the Mars sample is adequately contained, officials said.

"It is taking advantage of the human architecture, because we anticipate it will be there," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate.

"And it potentially solves an issue of, when we return samples, somewhere we have to make sure that the samples are completely contained so there's no chance ? remote as it may be ? that there is something on Mars that could contaminate Earth," he added.

NASA is hoping to launch its first piece of the Mars sample-return architecture in 2018 or 2020, Grunsfeld said. The agency has just $800 million or so to work with until then ? too little for a rover, so NASA will likely launch an orbiter if it chooses the 2018 opportunity, Figueroa said.

But just when pristine little pieces of the Red Planet could make their way to Earth ? and into scientists' labs ? remains very much up in the air.

"As far as time frame ? that's all forward work, to figure out," Grunsfeld said.

In a year of strife between worker and manager, NFL referees found themselves with a bargaining chip that Chicago teachers, striking bulldozer builders and locked-out sugar makers lacked: a staggering blunder by overmatched replacements, resulting in a worst-case, told-ya-so fiasco laid bare for millions to watch in disbelief on national television.

On Wednesday, the NFL and the referees' union appeared on the brink of ending a three-month stalemate, two days after the Green Bay Packers lost a game they would have won if not for a less adept crew of replacement officials.

The whole mess ? and pretty much everyone involved agrees it is precisely that ? puts the spotlight on a nebulous notion that is often overlooked when it works as it's supposed to: the question of expertise.

Workers leverage theirs by going on strike, while lockouts are a bet by management that they can make do without it. It's an impasse that usually plays out on picket lines and private bargaining tables, and the fight has trended in recent years toward management.

But few unions have benefited as much as the NFL's striped shirts from such a high-profile validation of the value of expertise. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, from rank-and-file laborers to the most senior of American managers, this one has hit home.

"The big difference is that 100 million people can see football on TV, so the mistakes are glaring," said Mark Froemeke, who's been locked out of his job as a loader-operator at an American Crystal Sugar Co. plant in East Grand Forks, Minn., for 14 months. "The mistakes that the scabs are making in the factories are behind closed doors."

Froemeke said he knows the people hired as replacements for the 1,300 locked-out union workers inside the plants are bumbling with beet slicers and unable to dry pulp in techniques passed down through generations. "If the farmers and the management want to be like the NFL owners and deny it, that's what they're going to do. But nevertheless, it's the reality."

Ken Margolies, a senior associate at the Worker Institute at Cornell University, said the instant upper hand that NFL referees commandeered this week is increasingly rare for uniquely skilled workers in labor disputes. One major culprit is technology: tool-and-die workers in the auto industry couldn't be replaced easily before automation, and management can now outsource jobs like customer service to overseas.

The NFL referee lockout, he said, is most recently comparable to the 2007 writer's strike in Hollywood in terms of profile. But Margolies said he couldn't recall such a "blatant example" where a labor standoff turned on this kind of debacle.

"It's just so obvious that people couldn't be replaced and get the same result," he said.

Attitudes about expertise can also make it a risky hand to play in a negotiation, depending on who's on the other side of the table. The idea that no one is irreplaceable and there's always a guy next in line willing to do the job runs deep in America. Professing expertise can also bring on suspicions of elitism and scratch an itch to knock someone down a peg.?

Other work stoppages around the U.S. this year also illustrate the role of expertise, albeit in varying ways:

? In Houston, Adrianna Vasquez makes $8.60 an hour doing what she knows people think is the world's most replaceable job: She's a janitor. When the 37-year-old returned in August to resume cleaning the 100 toilets on 10 floors in a downtown Chase Bank tower after a citywide janitor strike that won a 12 percent raise, Vasquez said the bathrooms cleaned by replacement crews looked like stalls in a seedy bar. "I just wanted to cry when I saw it," she said.

? In New York, Consolidated Edison locked out 8,000 workers in July and brought in replacements from other states to work power lines and operate the grid. It ended just as severe storms hit and threatened power outages. "Not enough people that knew what they were doing," said John Melia, a spokesman for the Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers Union of America.

? In Illinois, where the Chicago teachers' strike kept 350,000 students out of class for a week this month, a lesser-known strike began in May at a Caterpillar Inc. plant. The heavy machinery manufacturer hired replacement workers and the strike ended in August in what was widely seen as a victory for the company. John Hunt, 51, said he saw what appeared to be empty and lightly loaded shipping trucks leaving the plant under the replacement workers, but he never saw it as a turning point. "The company's line was, 'Doing great and we're not hurting production.'"

The NFL referees' union wants improved salaries, better retirement benefits and resolution of some other logistical issues. The NFL is proposing a pension freeze and a higher 401(k) match; the union is balking because of the greater risk to the nest egg that comes with the loss of a defined benefit.

For American Crystal Sugar, which locked out employees in five factories in three states, vice president Brian Ingulsrud acknowledged that the union workers are "very skilled" and said it was a "big challenge" to bring in replacements. He said the company worked hard at training the new workers in the months when the plants were not processing beets.

"It was a learning curve, there was no doubt," Ingulsrud said. "Last year we did have some bumps in terms of working through that. We feel we're on the right side of the curve right now."

The sugar executive, by the way, thought the right call was made at the end of the Monday night football game.

"When I saw the replay," Ingulsurd said, "it was really the case where the tie goes to the offensive guy."

Autographer wearable camera takes the whole taking pictures thing out of taking pictures

Image

Sure, we've all got a camera on us at all times, thanks to the prevalence of smartphones and point-and-shoots, but these devices present an issue when it comes to that modern human desire to electronically capture everything that happens everywhere ever: having to actually take the pictures. That's why the unsettlingly giddily-named OMG Life is working to unleash the Autographer, a hands-free, wearable camera that promises to take "thousands of photographs a day" via its wearable lens. Just drape it on your person and it will uses its six on-board sensors (GPS, color, accelerometer, motion detector, magnetometer and thermometer) to determine the right moment to snap one of its unwieldy volume of images. Says the company,

For instance, Autographer might capture an image when the wearer speeds up as they run for the bus, moves from a warm pub to a snowy street or turns around to greet a friend.

Also, you know, stuff like your wedding and the birth of your child. The camera's got a five-megapixel sensor, OLED display, 8GB of on-board storage and built-in Bluetooth for sharing those pictures. The company's currently aiming for a November release, just in time for capturing every single moment of the holiday season. In the meantime, the press info is after the break.

globalEDGE Blog: gE Blog Series: Global Branding Part 3 ...

The food and beverage industry covers an assortment of products and companies within.? It happens to include one of the largest commodity markets, coffee.? With its distinctive socio-cultural ties, coffee has been produced, branded, and marketed uniquely in every part of the world.? With any product, various factors must be taken into consideration when developing a brand: consumption patterns, cultural relevance, product expectation, and marketplace competition to name a few.? Branding essentially tries to build an emotional kinship with the consumer that transcends the products actual function.? Brands aspire to create an identity, a lifestyle to live by.

Brand expectation also fluctuates by cultural outlook.? American society places emphasis on the environmental awareness and social responsibility of their drink (e.g. fair-trade, organic), while most European and South American have adopted certain brews as national treasures (e.g. Sumatra blend from Indonesia, Columbian roast from the Andes, Arabica from Turkey, Robusta originating from Vietnam).? A company must include all these aspects into their final product, but emphasize various aspects depending on the social demographics.

Companies competing in the coffee industry are a perfect example of how brand definition should be altered based on cultural connotations.? Nescaf?, a multinational coffee supplier, branded their products as memories that create lasting impressions in Southeast Asia.? Whereas, in the United States, their brand has been built as the ?Taster?s Choice?, satisfying a consumer?s need for caffeine while fulfilling their desires.

Some may see the dark beverage as offering a brief time for mental recuperation and relaxation done during a ?coffee break,? while others might view it as a leisurely caf? drink to be enjoyed slowly in the company of friends.? Thus, a different brand is derived, and a distinctive emotional connection put to the test.? What other industries do you see trying to transform a commodity into a lifestyle?

American Family Insurance to Acquire Permanent General

American Family Insurance has reached an agreement to acquire PGC Holdings Corp. (Permanent General Companies) and its subsidiaries, including non-standard auto insurers Permanent General and The General.

The agreement was announced by American Family and Capital Z Partners, majority owner of PGC Holdings Corp. Closing of the anticipated $239 million transaction is targeted for later this year, subject to regulatory approval.

?American Family Insurance will grow by reaching out to customers in new states and new markets, and also by strengthening our appeal to customers in our existing states,? said Jack Salzwedel, American Family chairman and chief executive officer.? ?This acquisition expands our holdings to include a company with different capabilities that also operates in some states we don?t currently serve. It also provides American Family an opportunity to learn from a company with successful experience in direct insurance sales.?

PGC Holdings, also known as Permanent General Companies, will remain a completely separate brand from American Family and will continue to operate as a separate entity. Employee positions will be retained, and Randy Parker will continue in his role as Permanent General?s chief executive officer.

Based in Nashville, Tenn., Permanent General, www.pgac.com, specializes in serving the non-standard auto insurance market through its subsidiaries, Permanent General and The General, www.thegeneral.com. The company sells its products in 25 states through the Internet, call centers, and in some states independent agents who specialize in non-standard coverage, and partner retail store alliances. Permanent General reported direct written premium of $270 million at the end of 2011.

?The non-standard auto market is big, growing and largely untapped for American Family,? said Dan Schultz, president and chief operating officer. ?We will also learn a great deal from Permanent General about direct distribution, which is essential because we must reach those customers who want to deal with us through different channels for some of our products.?

Schultz said American Family agents will continue to be the heart of the company?s distribution system, and will still be the exclusive agent sellers of American Family products. Independent agents who sell Permanent General products will not sell American Family products.

Willis Capital Markets & Advisory acted as exclusive financial advisor to Permanent General Companies. Goldman, Sachs and Co. acted as exclusive financial advisor to American Family.

In a separate transaction, American Family is moving forward with an agreement to purchase Lumbermens Casualty Insurance Company (LCIC). LCIC is a subsidiary of Illinois-based Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company.

The purchase gives American Family the flexibility to expand into other states in the future. LCIC stopped selling and renewing insurance policies in 2003 and is a shell company. LCIC has property and casualty licenses (auto, homeowners and umbrella) in approximately 40 states.

Lumbermens Mutual was placed in rehabilitation by order of an Illinois Circuit Court on July 2, 2012. The sale of LCIC to American Family was recently approved by the same court. The sale is scheduled to be finalized on Oct. 1.
